SoZo HAIR Salon Tips

The number 1 reason is, hair color overlap.  The very best way to avoid damaged hair is to only put hair color where it is needed and where the hair can handle color.  In other words, putting hair color all over the entire head of hair repeatedly isn’t a good idea, it isn’t necessary either.

There are a couple of exceptions to that rule but, in general, it stands.  A very gentle deposit only color containing NO ammonia can be applied to lengths and ends of previously colored hair without causing too much damage, but it does need to be a quality product.  If hair color is to be lightened, it needs ammonia or a derivative, just to be clear, no ammonia color that I’m speaking of is for deposit only and toning.   I said a couple of exceptions but that’s the only one I can think of.  Since I don’t know “everything” I’ll leave the door open for 1 more potential exception that may be out there.

With so many choices of hair color, it can be way too confusing for most people to know exactly what they’re doing.  This is why I recommend a professional to deal with hair color.  Not only is choosing the right product, developer, tone and level important, application and placement are huge!

It can’t be stressed enough that the health of the hair should be considered in every hair color application.  If only the regrowth (roots) need to be colored, why put the color all over?  Even a highlight “retouch” should only be done on the regrowth.  Highlights are often done with bleach, this is the strongest of all hair color and overlap of bleach is the MOST damaging!  Though instant gratification is oh so common these days, we should think twice before over using or overlapping bleach.  Side note, add a hot flat iron or styling tool to overly colored hair and the problem is exasperated.

Hair color can be done in a safe, gentle and healthy way, it’s just that variables have to be considered and precautions taken.  Hair color knowledge and experience are what makes this happen.

These salon tips are truly to help your “hair life” and hair health be better on a regular basis.  If there is a topic you’d like us to write about, please let us know at SoZohair.net.
