SoZo HAIR Salon Tips

Over 30 years of cutting hair I’ve been able to experience many hair style trends and ways to achieve them. Though there is always more than one way to do anything, my favorite way of cutting hair is “dry hair”. The main reason is because I can see what the hair wants to do and how the growth patterns lay. When hair is wet, it will pretty much go where you put it and do what you want it to do as opposed to showing it’s true attitude.
One head of hair often has many growth directions, varying wave patterns, cow licks and things that just make it lay different in each area and on each side. These things show up once the hair is dry and can make a precision cut that was done wet look like an uneven mess. At the very least, checking a cut once it’s dry is imperative.
A custom hair cut is what I feel I achieve when cutting is done on dry hair. Custom hair cuts are what I call creative and artistic, not necessarily precise, and it makes for easier styling and a longer lasting cut. Dry custom hair cuts are more forgiving during the grow out stages, which means fewer bad hair days between cuts!
Some hair types and certain situations call for wet cutting. A couple of examples would be, really thick hair or hair that is going dramatically shorter may need to be cut wet but then customized dry.
The only downfall to cutting hair dry is, it can really fly around. Might want to close your eyes and not talk too much while the front is being cut, it can go in the mouth, nose, eyes and stick to lip gloss too, but it’s worth it!
Keeping That Look
Staying on a schedule is important for maintaining a great style. Even though a custom cut lasts longer, it doesn’t last forever. Letting it get too out of shape makes for more difficulty reproducing. Being consistent with hair maintenance reduces frustration on your part and your designer’s! After all, we wear our hair everyday, unlike an outfit we may wear once a week or so. “Pretty hair” is my thing, our crowning glory, an everyday accessory so it’s worth an investment.
